A youth space is going into Corbin Bay. What does a good one have to do?

The space opens in September with long opening hours and a quiet room, and without the kitchen.

What changed

Opening hours came top by a clear margin. So the brief was rewritten to pay for staff until 8pm on weekdays instead of 5pm. That took $46,000 out of the fit-out.

A quiet room that is not a meeting room went into the brief. It was not in the 2023 strategy and would not have been built.

The plan for a bookable events space was dropped after it scored last, and the floor area went to the main room instead.

What didn't

The kitchen stayed a kitchenette. A full kitchen came third on the list, and it needed $70,000 and a grease trap the building cannot take without work council cannot afford.

The building is still the old library. Several responses asked for somewhere closer to the station and the site was settled in 2024.

Weekend opening did not make it. Staffing to 8pm on weekdays used the money that would have paid for Saturdays, and that trade was made because the weighting put weekday hours first.
